Leisure provision within Slough is undergoing an exciting transformation with a staggering £34m being invested in leisure facilities for the town. These developments are being delivered through the council’s ambitious leisure strategy, with the ultimate aim to get more people, more active, more often.
The council is in the process of procuring a new leisure management contract to secure a long term partnership with a leisure operator and this exercise will run in parallel to the council’s capital improvements. The contract currently operated by Slough Community Leisure comes to an end in May 2017. The new contract will include the operation of the new leisure centre for Slough to replace Montem Leisure Centre along with other major public leisure facilities.
Slough Borough Council is committed to proactively addressing health inequalities through a network of formal and informal facilities – enabling greater levels of sport and physical activity throughout the borough. Its operating partner will be required to act as a key activator out in the community as well as running the new and existing facilities for the next 10 years, with one key aim – to get Slough more active and healthier.
The Sport, Leisure and Culture Consultancy has been appointed to provide the council with technical support up until the new contract starts on 1 June 2017. It is currently advising a number of other councils on securing sustainable leisure contracts across the UK.
Councillor Martin Carter, commissioner for community and leisure at Slough Borough Council said, “The Council is committed to providing its residents with high quality facilities and opportunities to take part in sport and active recreation. The new leisure contract will be key to unlocking the potential of our leisure strategy and realise our vision – to enhance the health and wellbeing of Slough residents by ensuring leisure activity is adopted as a habit for life for all – more people, more active, more often.”
Duncan Wood-Allum, SLC’s Director commenting on the appointment said: “We are delighted to be providing Slough Borough Council with procurement support to enable them to realise their vision to get Slough more active. The impressive level of investment in their facilities shows just how serious the council is about their wellbeing strategy priorities.”
